- People first settled on PHU QUOC island around 2,500 years ago. Stone tools, pottery and graves found in the north of the island show that it was once an important trading centre.
Phu (Phú): means fertile land / a flourishing place.
Quoc (Quốc): means nation, country or land.
- France began ruling the island in the late 19th century. Under French colonial rule the island’s strategic importance grew, while the freedom of local people was restricted.
- Today Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s first island city, and in January 2025 it was officially recognised as a Grade I urban centre.
